History of Sárvár
Sárvár is the second largest town of Vas County which is very proud of its history. It location was set by the trade route crossing the Rába river. As it is close to the border it had to face the intruders several times, but being an open minded town it ready to accept European traditions, as well.
It belonged to the King’s lands during the reign of the Árpád regime. The Sárvár name was first mentioned in 1192, but the old documents mentioned as Szigetm Sár-Sziget or Újsziget (Reanesos).
The Sárvár castle came into the property of the Kanizsai family in 1424 from Ozorai Pipó and later, due marriages, it became into the possession of the emerging Nádasdy family. During the 16th century Nádasdy Tamás raised the importance of Sárvár.
Famous people lived here during the centuries: Dévai Bíró Mátyás, the “Hungarian Luther”, Abádi Benedek, pressman, Sylvester János, translator of the Bible, who issued the Grammatica Hungarolatina, the Hungarian grammar book in Latin in 1539 and the first book printed in Hungarian, the New Testament, in 1541.
Metrical lines of Sylvester János proclaim the triumph of the Hungarian language. The translation of the New Testament became famous. Distich of the recommendation, made to the Hungarians - “said long time ago by the Prophets of God to thee” - is an excellent proof that no similar lines were written in Hungarian till the end of the 18th century.
The greatest Hungarian bard of the 16th century, Tinódi Sebestyén found a home in this town, after whom not only our restaurant but the town’s secondary school was also named.
He wrote lays on the fight against the Turks.
Szegedi Kőrős Gáspár, famous doctor and expert of herbs worked in the castle for Kanizsai Orsolya. Beythe István, preacher and his son, Beythe András, botanist also lived in the town. In the second half of the 19th century, the small settlements being on the edge of the town became close to the center. The streets of the town were built in a closed style. The center was created by the Greschrey-family.
One of the greatest Hungarian writers, Gárdonyi Géza lived and taught in the town in 1883-1884.
The civilization of Sárvár started in the 19th century. Several significant factories started to operate in the town: brick factory, dairy factory, sugar factory, silk factory. It is still a nice residential area as its geographical location, the area surrounded by the rivers limited it expansion.
An important date in its history is 1968 when it became town again.
